Microsoft Implementation of European Commission Decision

FAQ: Microsoft's Implementation of the European Commission's Media Player Remedy
This Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) provides information about Microsoft's implementation plans and progress for the European Commission Decision relating to the Windows Media Player issue. Microsoft will update this FAQ on an ongoing basis as these plans continue to move forward, and to address any additional questions that arise on a frequent basis.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What are these new versions of Windows and how are they different from Windows XP?
A: In compliance with the European Commission Decision, Microsoft will produce for distribution in Europe new versions of Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional. These new versions will not contain certain multimedia-related components specified in the European Commission Decision. These multimedia-related components are comprised of 186 files in these versions of Windows. (A list of these files is in the Appendix.) The regular versions of Windows XP Home Edition and Professional will continue to include those components and will remain available to European consumers.
Q: When will you implement the European Commission Decision?
A: We are completing the process of preparing these new versions of Windows XP for commercial release. We have agreed with the Commission on a reasonable timetable to distribute these versions of Windows XP. Now that we have received the Order of the President of the Court of First Instance, we are able to finalize testing and make them available to our largest computer manufacturers in January, 2005, and to others in February.
Q: How will Microsoft make these new versions available to the public?
A: We will make these new versions of Windows XP available through our standard distribution channels, including computer manufacturers and retailers.
Q. How will Microsoft price these new versions of Windows XP?
A: As was made clear in the proceedings before the President of the Court of First Instance (Paragraph 424), these new versions will be priced the same as Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional. This is consistent with the Commission Decision, as confirmed by the European Commission's statements and releases which acknowledge that Microsoft is permitted to offer the products at the same price. It is noteworthy that media players are generally made available for free via Web downloads.
Q. What are the names for these new versions of Windows XP?
A: We are currently planning to name these new products Windows XP Home Reduced Media Edition and Windows XP Professional Reduced Media Edition. As explained above, the essence of these new versions of Windows XP is that they provide less multimedia functionality than the regular versions of Windows XP. We have selected names that are descriptive of the products and which reduce potential confusion in the marketplace.
Microsoft's implementation of this remedy is subject to review by the European Commission.
