Intel lanciert neben den kommenden neuen Atom-Prozessoren und Platformen auch eine entsprechende Software-Initiative, da man für Atom spezialisierte Applikationen vermisst. Diese Entwicklerplatform, die Intel Atom Developer Program nennt, soll Entwicklertools enthalten und auch von Herstellern als Online-Store für Anwendungen herhalten. ASUS, Dell und Acer haben bereits angekündigt, das Projekt zu unterstützen. Der App-Store kann dabei unabhängig von Windows auch für Mobilin oder Linux genutzt werden.
Mit dem Store möchte Intel die MIDs und Netbooks noch attraktiver machen. Durch spezialisierte Anwendungen erhofft man sich eine bessere und breitere Nutzung der neuen Geräte zu ermöglichen.
"We want to fuel the growth of Intel Atom-based products designed for the mobile lifestyle," said Renee James, corporate vice president and general manager, Intel Software and Services Group. "The netbook has become one of the most popular consumer devices in the market today, but its true potential has been limited by applications that are not optimized for its mobility and smaller screen size. The Intel Atom Developer Program provides a great opportunity for developers to create useful and inventive applications that will unlock a netbook's potential while opening a new sales and distribution channel."
