Sony selbst hat zwar mit dem Xperia Z1 gezeigt, wie ambitioniert mittlerweile Smartphonekameras sein können. Doch höherwertige Digitalkameras sind selbst den integrierten Kameras aktueller High-End-Smartphones in aller Regel noch deutlich überlegen. Um diese Lücke weiter zu verkleinern, wird Sony zwei Kameramodule auf den Markt bringen, die an das Smartphone gekoppelt werden können.

QX10 und QX100 sind Kameraaufsätze, die für das Xperia Z1 und das Xperia Z entwickelt wurden. Mit Adapter sollen sie sich aber auf den meisten aktuellen Smartphones nutzen lassen. Konkret unterstützt werden iOS 4.3 oder höher und Android 2.3 bis 4.3. Das QX10-Modul bietet einen praktischen 10-fach-Zoom und einen Exmor R-Sensor mit 18 MP. Für anspruchsvollere Fotografen bietet sich das QX100-Modul mit 1 Zoll großem Exmor R CMOS-Sensor (20,2 MP). In Kombination mit einem F 1,8 Vario-Sonnat T-Objektiv von Carl Zeiss soll dieses Modul eine Bildqualität bieten, die der von Sonys Premium-Kompaktkamera RX100 II vergleichbar ist. Die Module nehmen per W-LAN Kontakt zur Kamera auf. Per NFC kann die Verbindung noch leichter hergestellt werden.
