Sony gibt bekannt, dass die PlayStation3 im Frühjahr 2006 erscheinen und Blue-ray Discs verwenden wird - die Discs können bis zu sechs Mal mehr Daten speichern als derzeitig DVDs.Die PlayStation3 wird abwärtskompatibel bis zur Original PlayStation sein, CR-ROM, CDR+W, DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-R und DVD+R Formate unterstützten. Sie wird außerdem Slots für Memory Stick Duo, SD und Compact Flash Memory haben. Eine 2.5 Inch Festplatte lässt sich herausnehmen. Die PS3 wird von Anfang an bis zu sieben Bluetooth Controller unterstützen. Sie besitzt sechs USB Slots (vier vorne, zwei hinten). Seitens der Technik hat die Konsole einen Cell Prozessor, der mit 3.2 GHz läuft und 218 GFlops Leistung bietet. Ferner gibt es 256MB XDR Main RAM mit 3.2GHz, 256MB GDDR3 VRAM mit 700MHz. Die System Floating Point Performance beträgt 2 TFLOPS.
Den Rest der Pressemitteilung findet man unter "Read More".Der Grafik-Chip stammt von Nvidia und heißt RSX 'Reality Synthesizer': GPU RSX @550MHz 1.8 TFLOPS floating point performance Full HD (up to 1080p). Er soll Grafik in Filmqualität mit 60 fps bieten. Die GPU soll leistungsstark genug für 128bit Pixel Precision, 1080p Auflösung (als Standard) und höchste HD Auflösung sein. Die GPU wurde in einem 90nm Prozess mit 8 Layers hergestellt. RSX soll leistunsstärker als zwei GeForce 6800 Ultras sein, die jeweils um die USD 1.000 kosten.
Multimedia-Funktionen wie Video Chat, Internetzugang, Anschauen von Digitalfotos, Digital Audui und Video werden unterstützt.
Folgende Spiele wurden via Pressemitteilung von Sony angekündigt:

- Devil May Cry 4 (Capcom)
- Final Fantasy-Serie (Square Enix)
- The Getaway (Sony)
Die Hardware soll laut Tim Sweeney von Epic Games leicht zu programmieren sein. Er zeigte auf der Konferenz ein Unreal Engine 3 Tech Demo, das wohl Unreal Tournament 2007 sein könnte.
Die Konsole soll definitiv erst 2006 veröffentlich, dies wurde seitens Sony nochmal bestätigt.
