Microsoft hat auf der CES bekannt gegeben, dass Windows 8 nativ auf System-on-Chip-Architekturen (SoC) laufen wird. Dies soll Prozessoren von Intel, AMD und ARM beinhalten. Erst vor wenigen Minuten hat auch NVIDIA eine eigene Entwicklung für eine ARM-CPU bekannt gegeben. Tegra 2 ist ebenfalls ein ARM-basierte Plattform, ein Einsatz von Windows 8 ist also auch hier denkbar. Die x86-Plattform will man aber natürlich noch nicht aufgeben und so äußert sich Steven Sinofsky, Präsendent der Windows und Windows Live Division wie folgt: "Windows is thriving on x86 platforms today with Intel and AMD and we will continue to see that success in the future." Im Bezug auf die heutige Ankündigung sagt Steven Sinofky: "Today we announced that the next version of Windows will support a new kind of hardware, SoC architectures, that will power the next generation of devices. NVIDIA, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments are working on SoC designs based on the ARM architecture. Intel and AMD will continue to innovate on the x86 32-bit and 64-bit platforms, including new SoC or low-power systems."
Wann Windows 8 erscheinen soll, wollte Microsoft noch nicht verraten.
