Asrock 870 Extreme3​

Aufgrund der Tatsache, dass viele User Fragen zu dem Board haben, habe ich mich nun mit der Aufgabe befasst, diesen Sammelthread ins Leben zu rufen, auch wenn ich selbst dieses Board nicht besitze. Es ist aber ein ziemlich beliebtes Board und bei so einem Board darf ein Sammelthread einfach nicht fehlen.

Overclocking:


Das AsRock 870 Extreme3 kann mit ihren konkurrierenden Platinen durchaus mithalten, auch wenn das Board vorallem beim CPU-Takt etwas zickiger zu sein scheint. Man muss allerdings auch dazu sagen, dass sich jede Komponenten individuell übertakten lassen. So wurde ein Phenom II X3 720 BE auf knapp 3,5 Ghz übertaktet, wie man dem Review von pctreiber.net von unten entnehmen kann. Zugleich macht die auf dem Board befindliche UCC (Unlock CPU Core)-Funktion einen recht positiven Eindruck, sofern man eine CPU erhält, wo der/die Kern/e blos deaktiviert wurden. Was noch teilweise negativ aufgefallen ist - die VCore kann unter Last wohl stark schwanken.

Ich bin mir dessen bewusst, dass dieser Thread noch lange nicht perfekt ist. Ich möchte aber darauf hinweisen, dass dies mein erster Sammelthread ist. Verbesserungen sind natürlich erwünscht und würde mich über eure Unterstützung freuen, um diesen Thread noch fülliger werden zu lassen.

It is set to x8:

2)If I remember you have BIOS version 1.50, why don't you upgrade to latest 1.60?

I didn't the bios upgrade yet because of the possibility to freeze. If it freezes during upgrade I will have a really big problem...

Asrock support service says me the ATI 5770 is supported since bios 1.60

Is this really true? Haven't read anything about it, because the only improvement for 1.60 listed is "Update LAN Boot ROM to 2.35."

This is what asrock support said me and they said they will add this information somewhere in VGA support list...
But when I received motherboard I had bios 1.40 and same freeze frequency as in bios 1.60 (except for this last 3 days I didn't have freeze).
One day I downgrade to 1.50 and seems (I underline seems) freezes were more frequent so I turned to 1.60.

If there's a freeze during bios upgrade is not really a huge problem:
1)many motherboard has a safe bios flash mechanism (for example putting bios in a CD rom and pressing some key configuration on boot to activate this flashing mechanism): I don't know if asrock has
2)the bios chip is extractable and you can send for a re-flash (there are a lot of companies that can do this). I had this problem with my old laptop fortunately the chip bios was not fixed so with 5-10 euros I had it re-programmed

This is one person that has almost our hardware and solved with a bios upgrade

I don't think that this motherboard has such a safety mechanism (I think it is called Dual Bios). From Asrock hompage (ASRock - BIOS Upgrade Instruction):

If you encounter problems while updating the new BIOS, DO NOT turn off your system since this corrupt BIOS might cause your system failed to boot up. Just repeat the process, and if the problem still persists, update the original BIOS file. If the Flash Memory Writer utility was not able to successfully update a complete BIOS file, your system may not be able to boot up. If this happens, your system will need service.

Oh maybe asrock doesn't have this further safe mechanism but I am pretty sure the bios chip is extractable (otherwise would be an incredible asrock mistake that has to throw all motherboard that has encounter a bad bios upgrade).

You can try the bios upgrade resting in bios as you said you never had freeze resting in bios (if you set a particular ddr voltage).

And if, for a very remote possibility, you permanently damage your motherboard think about the amount you pay for the motherboard and if it worth waste all this time for trying to solve this freeze problem

hab das problem, dass seit ich meinen pc ausgebaut habe (da das Gehäuse gerade lackiert wird) und im offenen Aufbau betreibe, wollt ich ne runde cod:bo spieln und es lief auf einmal viel langsamer/mit rucklern als sonst. Eigentlich konnte ich seit Release problemlos spielen, und jetzt habe ich glaube ich die Ursache gefunden: CPU-Z zeigt mir an meine GPU läuft nur mit x8 geschwindigkeit! und das war vorher nicht so, habe auch nichts verstellt im Bios oder sonstiges, jetzt ist meine Frage wie kann ich die wieder auf x16 einstellen?

1)In which slot have you plugged the VGA? The one more near at the CPU or the distant one?
2)Have you got other PCI peripherals or using SATA3, USB3 devices? I ask this because I read that some motherboards turn the PCIE lane speed to x8 when using a combination of fast peripherals

i changed nothing at my system, i have several screenshots from prime95/vantage when i tested my system stability ~2months ago, on every screen gpu works @ x16 pci-e speed (for example this screen: http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/6449/vantage36.jpg). now cpu-z says link width x8, and black ops doesnt run playable anymore!! so i do think its because of x8 speed.

I read some people solved removing the VGA card and carefully cleaning metal contacts...you can try
Or you can try to make a hard bios reset (for example removing the cmos battery or using the jumper) and see what happens

problem solved, i cleaned the metal contacts several times, and after pci-e x1, x2 and x4 it finally runs at x16 again...now the problem is my sound card, but ill fix that too :P

If you have a modern VGA (as I suppose) you really don't need a sound card you can use an HDMI audio cable to bring the video and audio signal from the VGA to the monitor

if your sound card give you problems throw it away out the window and use the integrated one Asrock 870 Extreme has a realtek one inside, is not a monster sound card but do its job very well

I think I have solved my freezing problem by changing the PSU.
On Saturday, "playing" Lord of the Rings Online in DirectX10 with full details gives me a freeze in less than 10 seconds. F1 2010 freezes during loading screen. I have tested a lot: many versions of the display driver, disabling soundcard, graphics card in the other PCI-E slot and so on with no result. On Sunday with the other PSU (Seasonic 400W) no problems. I could play LOTRO many hours without a freeze and 60 fps.

So replacing the "old" bequiet 450W with the Seasonic 400W did the trick for me.

Glad to ear you probably solved!
I think I have solved too but I have no idea how: I thought I had solved simply changing the PCIE slot but now it seems I am stable even with the VGA back in the original slot!
The things I had done since I experience no more freezes were:
1)upgrading to bios V1.60 (flashing from windows: I must say I always had bios 1.60 and had freeze so few days ago I downgrade to 1.50 and then I upgrade again to 1.60)
2)Soon after bios upgrade: shutdown computer, cleared CMOS using the jumper ("short-circuiting" the pin)
3)Unplugged from the motherboard the case front panel HDA (High Definition Audio) connector because I thought could bring trouble with the VGA (was really very close to a metal part of the VGA card, and the connector was not fully made of plastic)


So in conclusion; because I tried already bios 1.60 and having freezes my issue seems solved by:
1)Clearing CMOS using jumper or
2)Keep outdistance the HDA connector from the VGA (that correspond to: choosing the distant PCIE slot for the VGA or unplug the HDA connector and leaving the VGA in the original PCIE slot)

In the next days probably I will have back my original ddr (now I am with kingstone I supposed to work) and I will try to plug again the HDA connector

Hallo,

ich bin jetzt auch "stolzer Besitzer" dieses Boards und bisher sehr zufrieden. Meine neuen 2x4GB A-Data-Speicher, sowie die Athlon II x3 450-CPU, wurden sofort korrekt erkannt und soweit läuft alles stabil. Als Bonus habe ich sogar das Glück gehabt den vierten Kern freizschalten zu können.

Zwei Dinge wundern mich allerdings etwas:

1. AIDA64 zeigt mir leider nicht die aktuelle DIMM-Core an - also die RAM-Spannung. Ist das normal bei diesem Board?

2. Obwohl im BIOS "S.M.A.R.T." für alle Platten auf "enabled" steht spuckt mir AIDA64 ebenfalls keine Werte aus. Bei meinem alten Sockel 939-System war das mit den gleichen Platten kein Problem.

Ich bin vorerst noch mit XP unterwegs und habe es im AHCI-Modus installiert. Liegt da vielleicht der Hund begraben?

und habe das Problem, dass ich nicht von der CD booten kann. Egal ob ich diese per F11 oder im Bios umstelle.

Are you absolutely sure the CD you put in is bootable one?
It happened to me when a CD was not well copied....

Ähm Dumme Frage: Aber die Bootreihenfolge hast so eingestellt dass das CD/DVD LW an erster Stelle ist? Und auch kontrolliert ob er das Übernommen hat? Das Problem hatte ich beim 1.5er Bios (oder wars das 1.6er?) Konnte einstellen was ich wollte er hat es net übernommen, nach nem Reboot standen die alten Werte wieder drin.

Habe jetzt auch das Board. Es funktioniert auch alles soweit, bis auf den CPU-Lüfter-PWM Anschluss. Wenn ich hierüber den Lüfter regeln will, kann ich die Geschwindigkeit zwar von 1-10 einstellen und der Lüfter reagiert auch darauf, aber nicht so, wie er es eigentlich soll.

Ich habe es so verstanden, dass ich eine Zieltemperatur und dann die max. Lüfterdrehzahlstufe angebe, bis wohin der Lüfter dann max. dreht um die Zieltemperatur zu erreiche. Leider funktioniert das bei mir so nicht. Der Lüfter reagiert hier so, wie er es an den anderen Lüfteranschlüssen auch tut: Je nach Einstellung dreht er auf einer festen Drehzahl, aber nicht dynamisch.

Der Lüfter ist ein PWM-Lüfte vom Xigmatek Gaia. Kann mir da mal jemand noch einen heißen Tipp geben oder bringt es die Asrock Lüftersteuerung einfach nicht?

Da ist ein kleiner Denkfehler drin, man gibt lediglich die max Temparatur ein z.b 60 Grad. Wenn er diese überschreitet wird der Lüfter mit Full-Speed drehen. Mit dem Wert 1-10 stellt man lediglich den min. Wert ein sprich du stellst 5 ein. Anders funktionierts nicht.

@Balburin: does your new PSU solved the freeze issue?

I had another freeze yesterday after exactly 15 days freeze free!
But I have to say I was browsing web with a lot of tabs opened full of flash contents such as flash banners youtube etc. I want to say I hope it has been a sporadic freeze

Yes I think the new PSU did solve the freezes, because with the old PSU I could only play a few seconds in directx10 and full details on (few minutes in directx9, low details and/or window mode). But with the new PSU I could play 4-6 hours without a freeze.
I will have more time to test on the weekend and next week.
