Ein Ultra B würde ich heutzutage auch nicht mehr quälen. Dafür gibt es boards, die eher verfügbar sind.
Ich bin immer noch am grübeln, ob ich bei meinem AN7 einen VDD mod testen soll. Bisher hat die Vernunft gesiegt...

Ich müsste mal mein A7N8X-XE modden. Da kann man im Gegensatz zum ASRock auch APIC abschalten...

War dein Ultra B vor meinem hier?

Zeitlich und vom Takt: beides eher nicht. Ich bekomme gerade so 250Mhz ohne quälen stabil, und auch nur mit viel tweaken. Mit zb dem Hellfire Bios sind 250 nicht machbar. Da auf dem Board Spuren von Hardmods sind ist es entweder schon degraded oder ein schlechtes Exemplar.

Macht aber nix, läuft es halt entspannt bei 240x10 oder so mit TCCD und wenig Spannung.

Man sieht auch direkt, dass die aus nem Notebook sind. Zumindest wenn die CPU nicht fachgerecht ausgebaut wurde. Die Macke am Tray ist typisch dafür.

Hab ich aber auch einige von. CPU scheint aber nicht schlecht zu sein.

Ich nehme da immer 2 zusammengeklebte EC-Karten odér n gekürzten Notebook RAM Riegel. Man muss die CPU ja nicht raushebeln sondern nur n Stück zur Seite schieben. Das muss man über die gesamte Breite des Prozzis machen. Wenn man n Schraubendreher nimmt, wie es wohl von AMD vorgesehen ist, macht man immer ne Macke rein.

Gekürzter (abgesägter) RAM Riegel deshalb, weil manche Notebooks wenig Platz lassen und das Gehäuse im Weg ist.

Meiner hat keine sichtbaren Spuren vom Ausbau, aber das Taktverhalten lässt darauf schließen (<2.6), dass die CPU nicht separat gekauft wurde.
Zufrieden sein mit dem was man hat oder jemanden 200€ oder so für seine GS-CPU überweisen. Choose

Sehe ich auch so. Ich bin mit meinem 2600+ zufrieden. Auch wenn ich selbst dafür gut gezahlt habe. Selbst die non GS CPUs werden teuerer. Analog zu den boards. Krass.
Btw. mein damaliger 2005er 2600+ konnte dem hier nicht das Wasser reichen. Der war neu.

25€ oder 35€ (Ø 30€) für den Duron AB @ T-Bred mit 2200-MHz+. Getreten wurde der nicht und der Kühler war sogar nur so ein billiges Ding aus Alu.
Beim Zocken hätte ich den Unterschied zu einem 2600-MHz Barton wahrscheinlich nicht bemerkt - in sehr seltenen Fällen vielleicht.
Was sind Frametimes

Mir war und ist es auch zu blöd, für solche Sachen Geld zu verbrennen.

Ich bin mittlerweile auch sehr zurückhaltend geworden was Hardware angeht. Irgendwann ist der Bestand einfach genug und man sollte erstmal mit dem arbeiten was man hat. CPUs habe ich an die 150 Stück, mehr braucht man echt nicht. Nur Boards verschiedener Hersteller fehlen noch, aber da habe ich keine Eile mit. Wenn was über den Weg läuft nehme ich das, aber keine Hunderte Euro für einzelne Boards…

Das lila ECS vom Adler ist im Zulauf, darüber freue ich mich zum Beispiel riesig. Und das (nicht mehr ganz so) Mini Projekt mit dem Thinclient läuft ja auch noch bzw dort bin ich langsam auf der Zielgeraden. Wird mal Zeit den Zwischenstand hier zu posten.

Einen Schrottler wo man gucken darf hätte ich auch gerne…

I've (finally) got a status update on the slotket project. I received the PCB's this week and assembled one adapter. Unfortunately both VIA and AMD boards won't post with it. I've also tried a couple of different cpu's but the post code keeps hanging on FF or FE which means that the CPU is doing virtually nothing. I double checked all documentation and even did some additional measurements on a Slot-A cartridge CPU to compare some stuff. All seems to be good, i also couldn't find any faults in the (PCB)design itself. My guess is that something is going wrong at the CPU initialization.

The CPU initialization seems to be consisting out of a Power sequence / Power OK signal and the ROMSIP transfer. In order to debug these signals, a high frequency oscilloscope is needed, my current scope only got 20MHz of bandwidth so that is a no-go for this kind of stuff. This project is a good excuse to invest in a nice scope though so i just ordered a Rigol MSO5354 scope which is specced at 8GSa/s and 350MHz of bandwidth. It's got 4 channels so it can be used to measure the clock-skew between multiple signals too.

Yes. AMD does this via separate pins. Iirc it consists of 32 bits which include fsb timings. I already documented my findings somewhere... You got the socket A FSB spec, right? If not, i'll dig through my archive. The exact sequence of bytes for the cpu/chipset handshake is in said PDF.

I already promised @Tzk a while ago to send him one but i just can't find the PCB's anymore. My next project will probably be a new revision for the FireRAM, the current design was made a couple of years ago and contains some design errors. I've also got some more experience in hardware/PCB design now so there are some things that i want to improve before ordering new PCB's. But no promises are made here, these are projects that i do in my spare time so i like to work on stuff that motivates me, and this motivation mostly comes from random thoughts/ideas.

At least i found my posts from 2022 where i mentioned that the RESET# and everything that follows it is described in table 57 of the AMD bus spec (21902.pdf). And following that is table 58 which describes what's inside the SIP packet (hint: open drain and push pull is in there). You got that PDF, right?

In other news: Das ECS N2U400-A von @Strikeeagle1977 ist heute angekommen. Ich habe echt noch nie so ein dermaßen leeres Board gesehen, da ist ja nix drauf Hat irgendwie was und das lila ist der Hammer. Jetzt muss ich den Benchtable umbasteln und dann darf es dort Platz nehmen. Im Bot liegt der FSB "Rekord" übrigens bei 166Mhz... Allerdings kann das Board weder Multi verstellen noch Spannungen anpassen. Gute Frage was man davon nachrüsten kann und was nicht. Und natüüüürlich ist der Bioschip verlötet. Klasse... Also erstmal sockeln, dann sehen wir weiter.

I just checked and that is indeed the document i'm using now for figuring out the startup protocol. In the AMD Athlon Model 4 CPU datasheet PDF i found a reference to the push/pull driver adjustment resistor configuration when using open-drain mode which verifies that at least the Thunderbird Socket-A CPU's were made to operate in open-drain mode.

I've also made a picture of the adapter, at least there is something to see now. A sharp eye will note the removed capacitors, that was from an attempt to get the adapter working:

I have more bad news. I will write it here. I have to redo the BIOS, that I did for you. I did a mistake in the memory setting part. Nothing critical, but instead of set the tRCD value to 2 my code deactivates the bank interleave setting. 😅 I will correct it. The second bad news is that the drive strengh values for the CPUs will not work for now. The system resets it back to the "auto" values. I was able to test it with my S462 KT133 board. My guess is, that this values will only work if I am able to do a reset command via southbridge. Same goes for the S2K timings like the "WRDATA Delay". VIA specifies this also in the datasheet:

If I will find the command and how to perform it, I will be able to test it on my board.

One other thing, that I was able to test. The mobile CPUs works with the KT133 Chipsets, but we are not able to change the multis via software. As far as I see, the CPU MSR register for config are not available. Changing by the default "start" multi should work.

Thanks for doing all this research, it would be great if you get those settings to work. Since all Slot-A bioses don't offer a multiplier option in the BIOS menu, would it be possible to add that such that mobile CPU's can be adjusted easily without having to mess with the L6 bridges? I believe that neither the AMD nor VIA chipset have the required registers for PowerNOW support.

The BIOS for my MSI K7T Pro board has a "hidden" setting for Multis, but these seems not to work for my version. My plan is to build a FID switch like this one: link.
My board works fine with Barton CPUs. It just need a patch from the BIOS pather to display the correct CPU.

I also guess, that the 751 Chipset will not have the PowerNOW support. The following 761 Chipset does work with PowerNOW though.

Hat der Glasschaber gute Arbeit geleistet, wa?

ist schon nen ziemlich glattes PCB, das lila K7VTA3 war wesentlich stärker mit Bauteilen belegt, ja

ich hätte dem Board ggf noch den Chipsatzkühler klauben sollen. Der passt viel besser auf die IGP vom Biostar optisch sowieso.

I guess yes. Depends on BIOS though. AWARD BIOSes tend to start with the Start Multi (6 on XP-M CPUs) and AMI BIOSes tend to use the Max Multis.
It seems like the FID Multi (jumper) switches on my S462 ASRock board uses same CPU Pins to change the Multi.

Board klemmt schonmal auf dem Benchtable und läuft wie erwartet einwandfrei. Aktuell ist Bios v1.0B geflasht, das lese ich jetzt erstmal aus und bügel dann das v1.0E drüber. Leider ist der Bioschip verlötet, also muss erstmal ein Sockel aufs Board, bevor ich (richtig) loslegen kann
