So, habe den Adaptec Support mal angeschrieben:
Hello,
i would like to buy a Adaptec 6405 SAS/SATA Controller and build a RAID 5 Array with 4 SATA hdds.
Because of my limited budget i can not afford "true" RAID drives, like the Western Digital RE ore Seagate Constellation Series.
As far as i know, some "Consumer" drives have Problems with professional RAID Controllers because of the TLER/CCTL Command Value.
Perhaps you can tell me, if one of the drives in the following list does not have these Problems an is compatible to the Adaptec`s Series 6:
- Seagate Barracuda Green 5900.3 (ST2000DL003) 2TB
- Hitachi Deskstar 7k3000 (HDS723020BLA642) 2TB
- Samsung F4 (HD204UI) 2TB
- Western Digital Black (WD1502FAEX) 1.5TB
Thank you very much for your help!
Regards
Darauf habe ich folgende Antwort erhalten:
Greetings from Adaptec,
Unfortunately it appears that none of the models you listed are in the compatibility report for the series 6 controllers
http://download.adaptec.com/pdfs/com...s6_lowport.pdf
We would recommend reviewing the report above to assure that the drives you choose will work with the controller.
In general terms, desktop drives are not a good choice for RAID, particularly when connected to an enterprise type of controller and using an enterprise O/S. Please refer to the following white paper from Intel that explains the difference between the desktop drives and RAID edition drives: Server Products — Enterprise-class versus desktop-class hard drives comparision white paper
WD drives that belong to the desktop category are not recommended for RAID due to the TLER issue: Difference between Desktop edition and RAID (Enterprise) edition drives
If you still choose to proceed with the use of desktop drives for a RAID, you must be prepared for the fact that you may suffer problems and risk possible data loss, so we recommend establishing a comprehensive backup and disaster recovery procedure.
Thank you for contacting Adaptec Technical Support
Sieht also eher nicht so gut aus.
