Intel is set to lower its 65nm CPU prices in order to speed up the transition between the 65nm and 45nm CPUs, according to sources at motherboard makers.
The Core 2 Quad Q6600 and Q6700 will see their prices drop from US$266 and US$530 to US$224 and US$266, respectively, on April 20 this year.
The company will also lower 65nm dual-core E4600, E2200 and E2180 CPUs from their current prices of US$133, US$84 and US$74 to US$113, US$64 and US$64, respectively.
Intel will launch two 65nm CPUs, E4700 and E2220, on March 2 priced at US$133 and US$84, respectively, then will follow with two 45nm CPUs, E8300 priced at US$163 on April 20, and E7200 priced at US$133 on May 11.
All the prices are in 1000-unit tray quantities.
Intel's 45nm CPUs will account for only around 3% of the company's overall desktop CPU shipments in the first quarter of 2008 and the proportion will only rise to 18% in the second quarter due the push to clear 65nm inventory. However, in the third quarter, Intel expects the proportion will surpass 50%, noted the sources.
